Interview processes are a two-way street. As you are assessing whether a candidate is good fit for your company, it is crucial to remember that they may be doing the same thing. If you feel the candidate is talented, there is a chance they will have more opportunities in line for themselves. If you ensure the interview if enjoyable, it will stand out in comparison to other interviews.

The key to an enjoyable interview is to make the interviewee feel comfortable and at ease. Ensure to create an environment where they are being listened to, respected and create an excitement about the opportunity.

  1. Remember manners

Generally, a good candidate will arrive to the interview early. As soon as you are aware they have arrived, ensure to make your way to them as soon as possible. Greet the interviewee with a smile and a handshake. Initiate an informal conversation asking them about their trip, offer them a drink, simply make them feel welcomed. Being punctual and welcoming will create a standard of mutual understanding and respect. Make sure you show them that you are interested and that they could be worthy of your time.

  1. Sell the opportunity

Initiate the interview by introducing the company, its achievements and its purpose. Discuss the company’s strengths, culture, practices and goals. Offer an overview of the team and outline the possibilities within the role they are being interviewed for, and discuss benefits they will be able to achieve. Implement personal anecdotes and talk about your journey within the company. This will enable the interviewee to envision in being part of a great and progressed company, making them feel a sense of enthusiasm.

  1. Be encouraging

Once the interviewee starts answering the questions, ensure to listen carefully. Make sure you do not interrupt them. If they happen to trip up on their words, do not finish their sentence, just be patient and wait for them to finish. If you are unsure about their answer, ask the interviewee to explain further and give examples. This will make them feel engaged and that you are interested. If you are impressed with their answer, praise them as this will bring out the best in them.

  1. Conclude on a good note

It is vital to end the interview with thanking the interviewee for their time and advising them when they are most likely to hear back from you. Offer feedback after the interview, even if you feel they are unsuccessful. This will create easiness in their mind and will build a positive experience in their memory.
